At Potteries Auctions, we’re privileged to encounter unique and fascinating valuables from around the globe, especially during our house clearance endeavours.
Over the years, we’ve uncovered a vast array of items in our house clearances, from Russian silver spoons and South African Krugerrands to a WWII German U-Boat clock and even Honduran cigars.
However, our latest house clearance takes us to Southeast Asia, where the belongings of an officer from the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars await their next chapter. These treasures, once cherished by Ruth Evans, his daughter, offer a glimpse into a life shaped by history.
For this house clearance though, the contents originate from Southeast Asia, and some were the belongings of an officer of the 8th King Royal Irish Hussars. These items were then inherited by his daughter’s estate after he passed in 1981.
Ruth’s Story
Born in 1929, Ruth Evans’ story begins with her parents, both originally from Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. In 1924, the couple tied the knot, and just three years later, they embarked on a new adventure, relocating to Singapore.
Ruth in Singapore as a child
Ruth’s father, Harry Birchell, served as a dedicated officer in the 8th King’s Royal Irish Hussars before transitioning to the prison service. His career would eventually lead him to the prestigious rank of Chief Officer at Changi Prison. However, his fate took a dramatic turn in 1942, when the Japanese invaded Singapore and Harry was captured and interned in the very prison he once commanded.
This carved hardwood panel of a cat, crown and keys reads ‘Parcere Subjectis’ which translates to ‘Treat Prisoners Well’ belonged to Ruth’s father and is estimated at £30 – £60 in our upcoming Rare Ceramics, Jewellery & Collectables auction this November
Meanwhile, Ruth and her mother narrowly escaped this dark chapter of history. They narrowly secured passage on the ‘Empress of Japan’, the last ship to depart Singapore before its surrender. This fortunate escape allowed them to evade capture and continue their journey.
Following the end of the war, Ruth and her family returned to Singapore, where Ruth began building her own career. A talented photographer, she spent a year working in Australia, capturing the world through her lens.
It was during this time in Singapore that she met Albert, the man who would become her husband. They married at the iconic St. Andrew’s Cathedral, and their life together blossomed in Singapore before they eventually moved to the UK in the mid-1950s.

Back in the UK, Ruth launched a successful business breeding and showing Boxer dogs. Her talents didn’t go unnoticed, and Ruth quickly rose to prominence, winning numerous accolades, including “Best of Breed” at Crufts. Her expertise earned her a reputation as a sought-after judge and speaker at dog shows both in the UK and the United States.
The Estate
In this particular house clearance, we were fortunate to uncover a selection of items that offer a window into Ruth’s extraordinary life.
This is a collection of vintage car badges comprising AA Malaya, The Singapore Anti Tuberculosis, British Boxer Club, RAC etc, most likely belonging to Ruth’s father, estimated at £40 – £80
Among the discoveries were 9ct gold jewellery, vintage car badges, and timeless Chanel perfumes—each piece carrying its own story and charm.
This overseas high carat gold brooch, set jade (or similar) and a cultured pearl has been tested as 18ct of higher and is estimated at £50 – £100
These treasures, alongside many more, will soon be available for auction, offering collectors a rare chance to own a piece of history.
