We have an interesting letter coming up in the next Antiques & Fine Art Auction which will be held in June 2017.
The SS Britannic was the third of the White Star Line’s Olympic Class of vessels. She was the sister ship of RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic. SS Britannic was launched just before the start of the First World War and was laid up at her builders in Belfast for many months before being put to use as a hospital ship in 1915. SS Britannic was hit by a torpedo on the morning of 21st November 1916 and sank in 55 minutes later, killing 30 people.
This letter was from a man stationed on the ship by the name of George indicating that the ship was lying in the Solent during February 1916 awaiting orders. The letter was written to his friend Ernest on the finest White Star Line paper.
